Heceta Head Lighthouse May 12, 2009 |
The Heceta Head Lighthouse claims to be the most photographed lighthouse in the world. |
Heceta Head Lighthouse flashes its one million candle power beacon every ten seconds and can be seen as far as 21 miles at sea. Built in 1894 and maintained by the United States Coast Guard.
The above photos were taken from a cliff across the way - the below photos were taken from the same cliff, but looking down into the ocean.
The area surrounding the lighthouse is well-known as an outstanding wildlife area. Common murres lay their eggs on the bare rocks, and can be seen by looking down over the railing near the lighthouse. Brown pelicans commonly fly by, as do bald eagles. In May there may be migrating gray whales, although the two RV Gypsies did not see any on this day even though it was May.

Known as the Gem of the Oregon Coast, Yachats is a village of about 635 people and is located at the mouth of the Yachats River. Long known as a vacation destination, the resort village draws people who appreciate its unique qualities. A popular 3-day series of cameo performances by 20-30 major classical artists is held annually in July. |
