The two RV Gypsies learned about Deception Pass, the Bridge and surrounding area on a tour aboard the “Island Whaler” and enjoyed the thrill of the jet boat ride through Deception Pass with a knowledgeable interpreter.

The open deck and low-slung cabin of the seafaring sloop granted easy views of the steep, rocky landscape. Captain Brett chimed in against the breeze with educational details about the pass's historical significance, structures, and ecology.

history clipa art book The Bridge: Before this landmark was built, travelers had to cross on an unscheduled ferry. To summon the ferry, passengers would simply hit a mallet against a metal lumberjack saw which sounded the “BOING” to the operator. This indicated they were ready to cross, and the first woman ferry boat captain in Washington would pick them up.
