at Linville
Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway Linville, North Carolina - May 7, 2010 |
Erwins View Trail, a moderate hike of 1.6 miles round trip, offers hikers several overlooks, each revealing a different aspect of the Linville Falls area. |
Below: The two RV Gypsies
began their hike to Linville Falls - May 7, 2010 |
|
Below: The two
RV Gypsies walked the trail and peeked through the woods
at the first views of the Linville Falls |
|
Below: The
Linville River spilled gently over the upper falls where it widened and
paused. |
|
Below: The two RV Gypsies
enjoyed the view of the Linville Falls |
|
Below: The upper
falls pool quietly before drifting into a narrow canyon, then the water
suddenly spirals out of sight and plunges 45 feet over the lower falls. |
|
Below: Lee Duquette relaxed and watched water spiraling downward as it prepared to drop 45 feet below to the lower falls area.
Below: As the water
twisted and turned, it disappeared around the corner and through the cliffs,
then down to the lower falls. |
|
Below:
Then the two RV Gypsies hiked to another viewing area called Chimney
View Overlook, the first point on the trail where the lower falls
can be seen. It offered an excellent chance to photograph both the upper
and lower falls. The overlook is named for the chimney-like outcroppings
located to the right of the waterfall. The trail was strenuous in this
area with considerable elevation gain. |
|
Below: From here, the two RV Gypsies could barely see the upper falls and where it "pools". But they saw the lower falls as it reappeared through the cliffs.
Below: Lee Duquette sat
on the wall and enjoyed the view |
|
Below: Lee Duquette
spotted hawks flying in the sky above him |
|
Below: While Lee Duquette sat on the wall, he looked down behind him and saw the river flowing through the woods.
Below;: From the Chimney View Overlook, Karen Duquette looked up and photographed the area where they will hike to next - Erwins View Overlook.
Below: Then the two RV Gypsies
hiked to "Erwins View Overlook." The Erwins View Trail ends
at Erwins View Overlook. |
|
Below: From this vantage
point, the two RV Gypsies enjoyed a panoramic view of the Linville Gorge
and a distant view of the upper and lower falls. |
|
The two RV Gypsies spent a bit of time just relaxing and enjoying the weather and the view before they hiked back to their truck.
Below: A great sign at the visitor's
center "Critters against Litter" and more. |

the area was full of Christmas tree farms |
