Stewart and Hyder are on a spur of the Cassiar Highway at the head of Portland Canal, a narrow saltwater fjord approximately 90 miles long. The fjord forms a natural boundary between Alaska and Canada. Stewart has a deep harbor and boasts of being Canada's most northerly ice-free port. Stewart served as the center for Canadian mining activity, Mining ceased in 1956 with the exception of the Granduc copper mine which operated until 1984. Today the economy is driven by forestry, mining and tourism.

Park rules - no washing vehicles in park, no clotheslines, no food, utensils, grills and such are NOT to be left outdoors at night. Report all bear sightings to park staff, walking in the park after dark not recommended as bears and wolves DO visit, no fireworks. The park had clean washrooms open 24 hours, coin operated showers - one Canadian dollar for 4 minutes, - NO laundry, a pay phone on deck of office, cable TV. No Wi-Fi. Close to the Hyder border.

Just outside the campground, they found a free driving range, with golf balls and clubs just sitting there waiting to be used. NEAT! The signs were not in good condition, but it is such a great thing for volunteers in a community to offer this opportunity to people.

These movies include: - Bear Island, starring Donald Sutherland, Lloyd Bridges and Vanessa Redgrave - 1979 - The Thing, starring Kurt Russell, 1982 - Iceman, starring Timothy Hutton and John Lone, 1984 - Leaving Normal, starring Meg Tilly, Christine Lahti and Barbara Russell, 1992 - Insomnia, starring Robin Williams, Al Pacino and Hilary Swank, 2002 - Eight below, starring Paul Walker, 2005.
