Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock and the site of Stone Mountain Park, 15 miles east of Atlanta, Georgia. Outside the park is the city of Stone Mountain, Georgia. The park is said to be the most visited tourist site in the state of Georgia. (Note: Lee and Karen Duquette were here several previous times)

The park is owned by the state of Georgia. At its summit, the elevation is 1,686 feet above sea level and 825 feet above the surrounding area.

Stone Mountain, once owned by the Venable Brothers, was seen from the outset as a memorial to the Confederacy." Stone Mountain Park officially opened on April 14, 1965 100 years to the day after Lincoln's assassination, although the park had already been in use for a few years.

Below: Karen and Lee Duquette took the Skyride aerial tram to the mountain top. This high-speed Swiss cable car transported everyone more than 825 feet above ground to the top of Stone Mountain. However, The summit of the mountain can also be reached by a walk-up trail on the west side of the mountain for the young and daring.

Below: Stone Mountain is well known for the enormous rock relief on its north face, the largest bas-relief artwork in the world. The carving, completed in 1972, depicts three Confederate leaders, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. (Lee and Karen Duquette thought it looked faded and in need of a cleaning. It obviously looked much better when they were here in 2011).

Below: After coming back down from the Stone Mountain Dome, Lee and Karen Duquette took a walk in the wooded area and past the pond where the fireworks will be shot from later on at night. But Lee and Karen decided that they came here way too early in the day and did not want to hang around until dark.

Below: After an exhausting walk on a warm day, Lee and Karen found themselves by the Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad which was closed on this date. But since they have ridden on it in past years, they were not too upset.

But to get out of the wooded area they just walked through, they had to climb through the middle of a fence, which was not easy for them. But they did entertain some onlookers that were sitting on a nearby bench.
