Stone
Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock and the site of Stone
Mountain Park, 15 miles east of Atlanta, Georgia. Outside the park is
the city of Stone Mountain, Georgia. The park is said to be the most
visited tourist site in the state of Georgia. (Note:
Lee and Karen Duquette were here several previous times)
The park is owned by the state of Georgia. At its summit, the elevation
is 1,686 feet above sea level and 825 feet above the surrounding area.
Stone Mountain, once owned by the Venable Brothers, was seen from
the outset as a memorial to the Confederacy." Stone Mountain
Park officially opened on April 14, 1965 100 years to the day
after Lincoln's assassination, although the park had already been in
use for a few years.

Below: Karen and Lee Duquette took the Skyride aerial tram
to the mountain top. This high-speed Swiss cable car transported everyone
more than 825 feet above ground to the top of Stone Mountain. However,
The summit of the mountain can also be reached by a walk-up trail
on the west side of the mountain for the young and daring.

as the Skyride starts going upwards. The mountain ranges in composition
from quartz monzonite to granite and granodiorite and is more than 5
miles in circumference at its base. |
|
|
Below: Stone Mountain is well known for
the enormous rock relief on its north face, the largest bas-relief artwork
in the world. The carving, completed in 1972, depicts three Confederate
leaders, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. (Lee
and Karen Duquette thought it looked faded and in need of a cleaning.
It obviously looked much better when they were here in 2011). |

be bought, signs could be read, and restrooms could be used. |

the top of Stone Mountain, Georgia. From here, Lee and Karen Duquette
saw amazing views of the Atlanta skyline. On really clear days, the
Appalachian Mountains and more can be seen up to 60 miles away. |

Below: Something embedded
in the stone at the top of Stone Mountain. It was not easy to read.
Most people just walked right by it and did not notice it. |
|
Below: After coming back down
from the Stone Mountain Dome, Lee and Karen Duquette took a walk in
the wooded area and past the pond where the fireworks will be shot from
later on at night. But Lee and Karen decided that they came here way
too early in the day and did not want to hang around until dark. |
|
Below: Although Lee and Karen
Duquette have been to Stone Mountain several times in the past, this
was an area they never saw in previous visits years ago. |

|
Below: After an exhausting
walk on a warm day, Lee and Karen found themselves by the Stone Mountain
Scenic Railroad which was closed on this date. But since they have ridden
on it in past years, they were not too upset.
But to get out of the wooded area they just walked through,
they had to climb through the middle of a fence, which was not easy
for them. But they did entertain some onlookers that were sitting on
a nearby bench. |

Below: Stone Mountain Park
was getting ready for the Pumpkin Festival which was scheduled to be
held September 14 through November 3, 2024, by which time, Lee and Karen
Duquette will no longer be in the area. But Karen enjoyed photographing
the pumpkin displays. |

Below are several travel exploration sites
to explore |
It is recommended that you visit the 1975,
1986, 2002, and 2011 combination Stone Mountain, Georgia site which
is very different from this one and includes The Duck Ride, Sky Hike
and more. A link at the bottom of that page can take you to this page. |
