Below: May 8, 2010 - The two RV Gypsies enjoyed the glide of an environmentally friendly Segway Personal Transporter with Moving Sidewalk Tours, Asheville's only downtown Segway Tour. The tour started from the Asheville Visitor Center, with some personal training followed by a 2 to 2.5 hour tour of downtown Asheville that included the Grove Arcade and the Urban Trail.

Below: The same Church in 2010 and 2023 - Basilica of St. Lawrence, Asheville. The Minor Basilica of St. Lawrence the Deacon and Martyr is a Roman Catholic church that was completed in 1905. The church was designed by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino in a Catalan architectural style.

Guastavino worked together with architect R.S. Smith and local residents of Asheville to create a catholic church that was in keeping with the city's preferred style. The exterior of the church has a visible display of many ornate stained glass windows.

The interior of the church is as ornate as the exterior. It includes an Italian marble relief of the nativity of the Christ, a Marian altar with carvings of a number of female saints, wood carvings and terra cotta panels. (Although the two RV Gypsies did not have time to go inside.)

Visitors are welcome to tour the church, which was named a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II. They can attend services or enjoy the beauty of the church grounds. The Basilica of St. Lawrence includes a Catholic library and a gift shop, both of which are open after church services on weekends.

Why You May Want to Visit:
Basilica of St. Lawrence is a rare example of Catalan architecture in North Carolina and you get to appreciate the beauty of many religious artifacts in the church.

And now the two RV Gypsies returned here for their 34th time on a Segway tour. The front and the back of Karen Duquette's shirt lists all of their Segway tours,

Old Kentucky Home -The Thomas Wolfe Memorial for American Novelist Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938) is considered by many to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature. Thomas Wolfe immortalized his childhood home in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfe’s colorful portrayal of his family, his hometown of “Altamont” Asheville, North Carolina, and “Dixieland” the Old Kentucky Home boardinghouse, earned the Victorian period house a place as one of American literature’s most famous landmarks.
