June 15, 2013

After touring the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse, the two RV Gypsies stopped at The Old Bailey School House, which was nearby.

The Old Bailey Schoolhouse in Alcona County is a reminder of what learning was like a century ago when this one was built. Norway Pines were used to construct this one room structure for the children of the logging crews and it was heated with a coal stove. Formerly located west of Mikado Township, it was taken apart and re-put together on the Sturgeon Lighthouse grounds near Harrisville for safer keeping.

Below: Lee Duquette enjoyed talking to the "school teacher" and exploring the charts on the wall. Karen Duquette was delighted to see the sample of cursive writing on the wall because she has been told that schools in the USA no longer teach cursive writing. That is a real shame in her opinion, since all USA historical documents are written in cursive. Even the way math is taught in school now-a-days is so much harder, in the opinion of the two RV Gypsies.
