Space Shuttle Challenger was the 2nd orbiter of NASA's Space Shuttle Program to be put in service, after the Columbia. It's maiden flight was April 4, 1983. On its 10th flight, on January 28, 1986, it disintegrated only 73 seconds after take-off, resulting in the deaths of all seven crew members including a civilian school teacher. This led to a 2-1/2 year grounding of the shuttle fleet.
