Lee
and Karen Duquette, The Two RV Gypsies: Full-Time RVers at Mount McKinley - also known as Denali June 29, 2009 |
| Mount McKinley aka Denali ("The Great
One") in Alaska is the highest mountain peak in North America, at a
height of approximately 20,320 feet above sea level. It is the centerpiece
of Denali National Park, and may be seen from many cities throughout Alaska, if it is not covered with clouds. Mount McKinley has a larger bulk and rise than
Mount Everest, although the summit of Everest is higher measured from sea
level 29,028 feet. However, Mt. Everest's base sits on the Tibetan Plateau at about 17,000
feet, giving it a real vertical rise of a little more than 12,000 feet.
The base of Mount McKinley is roughly a 2,000-foot plateau, giving it an
actual rise of 18,000 feet.
The mountain is also characterized by extremely cold weather. Temperatures as low as MINUS 75.5 °F and wind chills as low as MINUS 118.1 ° F have been recorded by an automated weather station located at 18,700 feet. |
| Below: The natives say that only 3% of visitors see Mount McKinley without any clouds at all and only 15% see the mountain covered with clouds, and most visitors do not see the mountain at all. But guess what - as shown below and in future pages on this website, Karen Duquette got photos of Mount McKinley with only a few clouds and even completely without clouds. AMAZING! | |
