The
Two RV Gypsies: Full-Time RVers watched Salmon jumping upstream in Seward, Alaska June 19, 2009 |
Within a short walking distance from Bear Creek RV Park, the two RV Gypsies came to a place where salmon were trying to get upstream. First they had to get through a big pipe that goes under the road and bridge. But there were so many salmon, they could not all fit through the pipe.
Below:
Some salmon got in water that was too shallow and got stuck. Some did
not get loose, so just died there. So sad! |
|
Before the salmon reached the pipe to get to the other side of the road, they had to swim upstream. In the photos below, each splash seen in the photo is salmon fighting their way to the pipe. The water was crystal clear with a rocky bottom.
Below: Once the salmon got through the pipe, they must jump upwards over a waterfall. There they were "captured" by the salmon workers, who count them, and then release them into the main stream.
Below: When the salmon jump, they must get into the bigger waterfall area, or they hit a gate, and fall back into the water and must try again.
Below:
The salmon shown below were about to be counted and released back into
the water. Karen Duquette took a movie, but does not know how to post
it. Some of the movies work from the movie button and some do not. |
