The
Two RV Gypsies: Full-Time RVers plus ADJACENT MOUNTAINS and a MOOSE IN THE ROAD |
Mount Wrangell is still an active volcano - a shield volcano. Mount Wrangell's mounding bulk formed 200,000 to 600,000 years ago from lava flows building layer upon layer. There are four major mountain ranges here.
Below: Most of the other mountains here (although they were not clearly seen on this date) once had the characteristic shield shape that Mount Wrangell still retains. These other volcanic mountains are older than Mount Wrangell; some formed nearly five million years ago and are showing their age. Thousands and millions of years of glacial sculpting and erosion have carved and cut the shields away.
Below: Willow Lake, located at the base of Willow Mountain, is a beautiful shallow water lake in South Central Alaska. Beyond the lake are the world famous Wrangell Mountains.

Lee and Karen Duquette was amazed at how few people, cars, trucks or motorhomes
they saw in either direction. |
