Rhode
Island (pronounced "road") is a state in the New England region
of the Northeastern United States. It borders Connecticut to its west;
Massachusetts to its north and east; and the Atlantic Ocean to its south
via Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound, and shares a small maritime
border with New York, east of Long Island.
Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state by area and the seventh-least
populous, with slightly fewer than 1.1 million residents as of 2020;
but it has grown at every decennial count since 1790 and is the second-most
densely populated state, after New Jersey. The state takes its name
from the eponymous island, though nearly all its land area is on the
mainland. Providence is its capital and most populous city.
It is unclear how the island came to be named Rhode Island
because despite its name, most of Rhode Island is on the U.S. mainland.
Its official name was "State of Rhode Island and Providence
Plantations" from its beginning in 1636 until 2020, and it
is referred to in that manner in the United States Constitution. This
name was derived from the merger of Colonial settlements around Narragansett
Bay, and outside the jurisdiction of Plymouth colony. The settlements
of Rhode Island (Newport and Portsmouth) were on Rhode Island, also
known as Aquidneck Island. Providence Plantations referred to settlements
on the mainland of Providence and Warwick. |

Below: A bit after leaving the Rhode Island
Welcome Center, Lee Duquette made a stop at a local CVS Pharmacy. While
Karen Duquette waited in the car, she saw a courtesy parking sign that
she had never seen in front of a CVS or any other store, so of course
she photographed it. |

Below: While Lee Duquette was putting gas in the car, in West Warwick,
Rhode Island, Karen Duquette looked across the street and used her
zoom lens to take a few photographs of The American Legion Building
and monuments on that property.

to the airport for the arrival of Karen Duquette's youngest sister,
Ilse Blahak, who lives in California. |

AND HERE
SHE COMES. |

airport lobby - and a close-up of the sign describing it. |

|
OH
NO!!! - Ilse's luggage did not arrive on the same airplane that she
arrived on. Her luggage and other people's luggage was put on a later
flight, so several people had to wait around several hours until 4 a.m.
to get their luggage. |
