Mount Baldy or Old Baldy,
is a 10,064 feet summit in the San Gabriel Mountains on the border of
Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties of California. Lying within
the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Angeles National Forest,
it is the high point of the range, the county, and the Los Angeles metropolitan
area.
Mount Baldy's sometimes snow-capped peaks are visible on clear days
and dominate the view of the Los Angeles Basin skyline. The peak and
a subsidiary one to the west form a double summit of a steep-sided east–west
ridge. The summit is accessible via a number of connecting ridges along
hiking trails from the north, east, south, and southwest, plus a ski
lift. |

Below: Mt Baldy has relatively
cold and very wet winters with moderate snowfall. (Luckily the two RV
Gypsies and family were here in September, not in the winter). Winter
temperatures often fall to 30 °F at night. It is usually 39–49 °F during
the day during the winter, and 25–35 °F at night. Annual snowfall is
about 42 inches.
Summer temperatures are mild to warm, and can get chilly at night.
Daytime temperatures are 76–86 °F, with lows of 49–62 °F . Thunderstorms
are not common, on occasion they brew in the mountains in and surrounding
Mt Baldy. They usually occur in the afternoon, and clear up by late
evening. And Guess What! Seconds after the two RV Gypsies and family
paid for the ski lift, it started raining. So Lee Duquette went back
inside the pay station and gift shop area to ask if they had any raincoats,
and the lady provided everyone with a plastic raincoat at no extra charge.
However, it did cost then $25 a person to ride the ski lift, round-trip. |
