The Two RV Gypsies: Full-Time RVers
Who can participate in a Segway tour in Mount Dora? Tours are limited to those 14 years of age and older. The rider must be between 100 and 260 pounds. The rider must be able to step on and off the Segway PT without assistance, which requires physical abilities similar to climbing and descending stairs without the support of a handrail or other walking aid. A short training session is given before the tour begins. |

The two RV Gypsies had to watch a mandatory Segway Safety Video even through this was their 12th time on a Segway. Then they each chose a helmet, showed off their Segway skills to the tour guide, and began a one hour city tour which began at the Segway dealership in downtown Mount Dora, Then they traveled alongside of the town's expansive waterfront and city marina. They were the only two people on the tour at this time. Karen Duquette's shirt lists all the places the two RV Gypsies have ridden on a Segway as of this date - but there will be many more Segway tours for them as they travel the USA and Canada. |
Below: Jane, The Segway Guide, let the two RV Gypsies ride around a small park area for a few minutes. That gave her time to talk on her phone. |
Below: Then Jane led the two RV Gypsies to the famous Mount Dora Lighthouse located on Tremain Street in Grantham Point Park on Lake Dora. The park is sometimes called Lighthouse Park. The Park was created from road rubble and fill to create one of Mount Dora's famous landmarks - the lighthouse. |
Below: Built to represent the "Port of Mount Dora", the lighthouse appears on many symbols. Recently the "point" has undergone a major face lift and is referred to by many local people as "Mount Dora's Favorite Spot". Though considered by many to be a faux lighthouse, it is registered as an inland aid to navigation, the only one in Florida. The height of the tower is 35 feet. |
Then the Segway tour took
the two RV Gypsies over to Palm Island Park, where they traversed some
of the most intriguing nature paths in Florida. Lee Duquette usually
rides his Segway behind Karen and takes photos. |
Below: Part of the Palm Island Park area included riding the Segway on the raised boardwalk over the water’s edge, with opportunities to view a couple of alligators and a variety of plants. Note: (The alligators can be seen through the link at the bottom of this page). |

Karen Duquette's shirt lists the Segways tour that they have taken. |
Below: In the town area, the two RV Gypsies noted a miniature Statue of Liberty. |
Below: When the tour left Palm Island Park and the boardwalk, they rode through beautiful and historic neighborhoods, past several of the town's well known and historic places, then back towards town via the Historic Lakeside Inn which was built in 1883 and still retains its original charm. And eventually, they had to begin the return trip back through town to the Segway home base on Alexander Street. |
Below: After walking around the town and browsing some shops, the two RV Gypsies returned to the Segway office for their afternoon Segway tour - The Dogwood Mountain Tour, another one hour tour. Only Segway guests who have successfully completed the Historic Mt Dora tour can book this secondary tour which follows the eastern shore of Lake Dora towards the beautiful and crystal clear Lake Gertrude, with historic lake side homes that were built in the 1920's. This was a higher speed tour, with less narration from Jane, the guide. |
Below: Karen Duquette made sure that she and Lee both wore different helmets during this second tour. Karen also wore her new sunglasses she had bought while shopping in town. The two RV Gypsies did not take a lot of pictures on this second tour. They just wanted to enjoy the higher speed ride with less stopping. However, there were several streets with a bit of traffic to navigate. |
