Thunder Bay's 50 million ton City Mascot is known as the Sleeping Giant, the panoramic Sibley Peninsula, a formation of mesas and sills that juts out on Lake Superior and forms the body of water that is Thunder Bay. When viewed from the City, this remarkable peninsula resembles a reclining giant. The Sleeping Giant figures on the City of Thunder Bay's coat of arms and flag. |
Below: A panorama view of The Sleeping Giant as seen from Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. The legendary Sleeping Giant lies on the tip of the rugged Sibley Peninsula near Thunder Bay. |
The photos below of the Sleeping Giant and the photos of the lighthouse were taken from several different locations in Thunder Bay, different times of day, and different lighting situations. |
Below: Lake Superior is the largest, deepest, and most northerly of the Great Lakes. It has been home to the Ojibwa people for over 500 years. An Ojibway Legend identifies the Sleeping Giant as Nanabijou, who was turned to stone when the secret location of a rich silver mine was disclosed. |
