Two RV Gypsies: Full-Time RVers at The North Pier Light in Presque Isle State Park Erie, PA June 17, 2021 |
Leaving Presque Lighthouse, the two RV Gypsies went to The North Pier Lighthouse, known as The North Pier Light. It is located at the end of Presque Isle. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the lighthouse from the park's entrance. The lighthouse watches over the entrance to Presque Isle Bay. The term Presque means almost an island in the French language. The black and white tower has been guarding the journeys of many mariners since the early 1800s. It was relocated to its present location in 1940 and was fitted with several heavy steel plates. It was listed on the National Landmark in 1967.It is only 34-feet-tall; the shortest of the lighthouses in Erie PA. It juts out nearly 600 feet from the shores of Presque Isle. It is a popular spot with fishermen and a great spot to watch the boats passing through the narrow channel. The keepers's house is at the Coast Guard Station near the end of the pier. |
