Two RV Gypsies: Full-Time RVers at The Erie Land Light at James N. Thompson Land Lighthouse Park 1200 Lighthouse Street in Erie, PA 16507 June 17, 2021 |
The light is a 1,000 foot walk from the parking lot, but it can be seen from the parking area. The location of the Erie Land Light is where one of the first two lighthouses were built along the Great Lakes. The first structure here was completed in1818. The current lighthouse is the third to stand on the site and dates back to 1867. It is only 48-feet tall. It is located on a bluff overlooking the lake, providing it with the ability to be seen from far out on the lake. Despite this, the light was decommissioned in 1880, though it was relit from 1884-1899. The original light is now on display at the Erie Maritime Museum. Although the Erie Land Light is no longer lit at night, and the inside is closed to the public, it is still a historic spot, and the two RV Gypsies enjoyed seeing the lighthouse. |
As Karen Duquette walked the path behind the lighthouse, she read and photographed several informative signs about Lighthouses. |
