map of Alaska showing location of Haines

Haines is 14 miles south of Skagway. It is in the northern part of the Alaska Panhandle, near Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The original Native name for Haines was Deishu, meaning "end of the trail" by the Chilkat group of Tlingit.

Below: Karen and Lee Duquette ready for a jet boat ride through The Chilkat Bald Eagle Wildlife Preserve. The cost on this date was $159 each. The preserve boasts the largest gathering of bald eagles anywhere in the world. They did see some bald eagles high up in the trees, plus a Trumpeter Swan and a few moose, but the photos are not really worth posting here. (Once they became The Two RV Gypsies and traveled to Alaska several times in their RV, they saw lots of eagles, even close-up).
