The
Two RV Gypsies: Full-Time RVers took their family to Valdez Glacier in Glacier View Park Valdez, Alaska July 17, 2016 |
|
The two RV Gypsies wanted to return to one of their favorite glaciers that can be admired from land in Alaska. They were also here in 2009 and the link to those photos can be found at the bottom of this page. Glaciers are always changing, so it is nice to compare them.Valdez Lake sits at the terminus of the Valdez Glacier and is often home to chunks of ice that are making a go of it on their own. It’s a nice place to get unimpeded views of the Chugach Mountains and the Valdez Glacier. It is a place worth seeing. In the early 20th century Valdez Glacier descended onto a glacial outwash plain that the city of Valdez, Alaska is built upon. Today the glacier has retreated into a mountain valley and is calving into an expanding lake. Valdez Glacier was one of the key factors for Valdez's success during the Gold Rush days of the late 1800's and early 1900's. This glacier was the main trail for prospectors and people headed into the Alaskan interior to find wealth in the gold fields. This trail was named the All-American route due to the fact that prospectors did not have to cross Canada into Alaska. |

Below: A big ice chunk and an amazing reflection in the water. The reflection almost makes the ice chunk look like a big blue fish. |
