Squirrel Hill Tunnel serves as an eastern gateway to Pittsburgh via I-376. It was completed after 8 years of construction at a cost of $18 million. At the time of opening, it was the single largest investment by the State of Pennsylvania Transportation Department. It is 4,225 feet long. Construction began in 1946 and opened to traffic on June 5, 1953.
